Writing and thinking with AI

Gloria Andrada (IFS, CSIC)

The ArgLab Open Seminar heartily invites everyone to a talk by Gloria Andrada (IFS, CSIC).

Abstract

In this talk, I examine writing with large language models (LLMs) as an emerging cognitive practice, drawing on Menary’s (2007, 2012, 2018) account of cognitive practices. I explore how this new, culturally situated pattern of activity may transform human cognition, focusing particularly on metacognition and the relationship between writing and thinking. I consider how writing with LLMs may reshape the cognitive processes involved in producing, developing, and evaluating our own ideas. Finally, I examine how the current design of LLMs shapes these processes and explore how alternative technological configurations might give rise to different trajectories of cognitive transformation.
