International Colloquium Fernando Gil
From 18 to 19 March at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

On 28 and 29 March, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation will host the International Colloquium Fernando Gil, an initiative organised by CHAM – Centre for the Humanities marking the 20th anniversary of the philosopher’s death and the beginning of the republication of his works by Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda. Over two days, Fernando Gil’s thought will be examined by some of its most distinguished interpreters, from Portugal and abroad, including former students and scholars from subsequent generations, highlighting the continued relevance, importance and influence of both his philosophical work and his intellectual legacy.

The organising committee includes Maria Filomena Molder and André Santos Campos, integrated members of IFILNOVA, who will also participate in the programme as moderators and speakers. The colloquium will also feature contributions from Marta Mendonça and Nélio Conceição, integrated members of IFILNOVA, and Nuno Fonseca, a collaborator of the institute.

Alongside academic papers and roundtable discussions, the programme will include the screening of a film by Abílio Leitão on Fernando Gil’s life and thought, as well as the launch of the first volume of his collected works.

The colloquium aims not only to revisit the philosopher and teacher who influenced several generations in Lisbon and Paris, but also to evoke the intellectual engaged in a constant dialogue with science and the arts, and a key figure in the internationalisation of universities and research centres in Portugal.
