Argumentation and education
Chrysa Rapanta, ArgLab, Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA), Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal
This presentation has both a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part, I am going to give an overview about the importance of argumentation in education, its main functions and skills, and why it is important for teachers to adopt an argumentative practice in their class. In the empirical part, I am going to present the main methodology and goals of the project with three secondary schools in the broader area of Lisbon which will start this September.

Quantification in practical reasoning. A Kantian perspective
Sérgio Mascarenhas, Faculdade de Direito, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal
At the core of legal reasoning is the interaction between the singular case and the general norm – in other terms, a quantificational issue. Recent developments in the logic of Law adopted First Order Logic and its existential and universal quantifiers. But does FOL provide the quantification concepts needed in Law and practical reasoning in general?
In my talk I’ll challenge the view that FOL’s quantification is adequate for practical reasoning. While keeping the standard quantifiers, I’ll expand and reframe them within a model that incorporates notions about quantification inspired by traditional logic (a particular attention will be given to the framing of quantification by Kant and Lachelier).
