Nietzsche and the wandering Jew

Ernani Chaves

Nietzsche refers to the figure of the “wandering Jew”, the mythical figure which inhabits our imagination and about which the most diverse narratives exist, at least three times in his works — twice in “The Case of Wagner” and once in “The Antichrist”. The aim of my presentation is to provide a broad outline of the theoretical and historical context from which Nietzsche makes use of this figure within his assessment of what is called the Judeo-Christian culture. Furthermore, I aim to develop some reflections on the possible relevance of Nietzschean analyses in the contemporary context, marked by wars in which Judaism and Jewishness occupy a central place.
