On June 5th at 7:00 PM, a discussion will take place at the Orange Square (Praça Laranja) of the Lisbon Book Fair on the book O Escândalo da Distância: uma leitura d’A Montanha Mágica para o século XXI, featuring the author João Pedro Cachopo and the historian and commentator José Pacheco Pereira. The discussion will be in Portuguese.
The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, widely regarded as one of the great novels of the 20th century, is known for its philosophical depth, offering profound reflections on themes such as death, time, love, violence, and life. In this essay, João Pedro Cachopo revisits the classic in light of its original context—the early 20th century—while also projecting it onto the challenges and dilemmas of the present: an era marked by technological acceleration and increasing political polarization.
O Escândalo da Distância is part of the “Ensaio Aberto” book series, published by Tinta-da-China in partnership with IFILNOVA and PUC-Rio, and is available in open access through the IFILNOVA Digital Library. It can also be ordered here.
