1 Research Grant for Post-Doctoral Fellow
Call open from February 23rd to March 8th

The Laboratory of Cinema & Philosophy (CineLab) of the NOVA Institute of Philosophy is seeking to recruit a Post-Doc Fellow in the scope of the Art and Technology working group financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT/MCTES).

Research fields

Philosophy, Aesthetics, Film and Philosophy.

Offer Description

The selected candidate will develop his work within the framework of a working group on “Art and Technology” of the Laboratory of Cinema and Philosophy, IFILNOVA. The research work will focus on the relationship between artistic practices and the development of new technologies, with the main purpose of analyzing, evaluating and critically discussing the way in which the alliance between art and technology poses new challenges and offers new ways of responding to contemporary issues related to social, political and economic paradigms.

The research program will include the organization of an international conference on the subject and a cycle of films or an event that brings together different artistic practices on the topic. The central idea is to address and explore the potential, the challenges, the consequences, and the aesthetic, social, political and economic implications of the relationship between art and technology in contemporary times.

Within this framework, the research program will:

  • Try to understand how the relationship between art and technology raises profound philosophical challenges and questions;
  • Approach and philosophically analyze concrete practices, discussing more general issues and those related to specific social and cultural contexts.

Accordingly, the grant holder is expected to participate in the organization of an international conference and in the programming of a film cycle or event that gathers different artistic practices. Work towards at least one publication on the topic of Art and Technology, possibly co-authored with other members of IFILNOVA, is expected. The grant holder is also expected to actively participate in the meetings of the research program, as well as in project meetings and other events of IFILNOVA (such as the regular “CineLab Permanent Seminar”).

Application deadline

The call is open from February 23 until 5 PM (Lisbon time) on March 8, 2023.
