Cinema & Politics – Open Lecture “The Cinema of reality”
The film A Fidai Film (Palestine, Germany, Qatar, Brasil, France, 2024, 78 minutes) by Kamal Aljafari will be screened during an Open Lecture of Film Programming, in a session organised as part of the undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences, and in collaboration with the Cinema and Politics: Philosophical Approaches working group. The Open Lecture will take place on December 12, 2024 (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM), in Auditorium B3 (Tower B, 5th Floor) at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon (Av. Berna, 26, Lisbon) with the filmmaker Kamal Aljafari participating via videoconference.
The discussion will be moderated by Paulo Portugal, member of the research group Cinema & Politics: Philosophical Approaches, PhD Student of Artistic Studies – Art and Mediation, and FCT scholarship holder.
The screening of the film and the subsequent debate marks the celebration of the 66th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (resolution 217 A III) on December 10, 1948.

Cinema & Politics: philosophical approaches
The Cinema & Politics Working Group’s dissemination activities aim to bring academia and society closer together, through the establishment of relationships between knowledge and artistic and cultural practices, especially cinema. The Research Group proposes a critical and reflective analysis of the impact of cinema on contemporary society, addressing philosophical, artistic, socio-economic and socio-cultural issues.
Through a careful selection of films that explore relevant themes, such as power, democracy, (in)equality, freedom, justice, resistance, memory, ecology, globalization, among others, the research group activities aims to stimulate debate and reflection on the relevance of cinema in understanding today’s world.
The Open Lecture is organised by Paulo Portugal, PhD Student of Artistic Studies – Art and Mediation with the support of Maria Irene Aparício Coordinator of the research group Cinema & Politics: Philosophical Approaches and Film Programming Teacher, within the scope of both the teaching activities of the 1st Cycle in CC, and the activities of the Laboratory of Cinema and Philosophy (CineLab).
