Jean Wagemans

In this talk Wagemans will present a tool for the reconstruction and evaluation of argumentation from expert opinion. First, he will analyze Walton’s account of the ‘appeal to expert opinion’ and the pragma-dialectical account of ‘argumentation from authority’. Then, he will show how these two dialectical accounts can be combined into a comprehensive tool for the assessment of argumentation from expert opinion. Finally, he will elaborate on the question as to how the presented combination of the two accounts may function as a model for the development of a dialectical ‘catalogue of arguments’.
