Lauren Freeman on “Switching the Script: A Harm-Based Account of Microaggressions in Medicine”
This research presentation will engage with Freeman and Stewart’s book, Microaggressions in Medicine (OUP 2024), in the following ways. First, the genesis of the project will be discussed, contexting it within the current research on microaggressions. The dominant account of microaggressions — what the authors call an act-based account — will be introduced and critiqued. Based on this critique, Freeman and Stewart’s harm-based account of microaggressions will be introduced, focusing on epistemic microaggressions. Examples of epistemic microaggressions will be discussed using case studies from medicine and focusing on the harms. The presentation will conclude by discussing the benefits of a harm-based account over traditional act-based accounts of microaggressions.
