Perspectives of Ukrainian Cinema

Olha Briukhovetska

This is an introductory talk in the cycle of interviews and lectures about Ukrainian cinema – its history, modern development, prominent representatives, challenges, and perspectives. The talk is devoted to the consideration of Ukrainian national cinema as a manifestation of Ukrainian national cultural identity. Much attention will be given to the discussion of Ukrainian poetic cinema and one of the most vivid manifestations of this artistic movement – the film “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” (1964). Through the example of this film, the issue of Ukrainian cultural resistance in the Soviet Union will be addressed.
