Reconstructing multimodal arguments
The ArgLab Open Seminar heartily invites everyone to a talk by Jean H. M. Wagemans (University of Amsterdam).
Abstract
How can we reconstruct arguments expressed through a combination of words, images, and other semiotic modes without reducing them to verbal paraphrases? This talk introduces the Multimodal Argument Type Identification Procedure (MATIP), a novel method for reconstructing and classifying multimodal arguments. As an operationalization of the Periodic Table of Arguments (PTA), the MATIP identifies argument types by determining their form, substance, and lever rather than by matching discourse to predefined argument schemes. By enabling the crossmodal aggregation of argumentative elements, the procedure avoids translating non-verbal content into verbal equivalents and addresses key challenges in multimodal argumentation research. The working and results of the method are illustrated through a detailed example analysis.
