Kant Reading Group – presentation and discussion of the text by Onora O’Neill, “Kant and the Social Contract Tradition” (in Constructing Authorities. Reason, Politics and Interpretation in Kant’s Philosophy, Cambridge University Press, 2015, pp. 170-185);
2 – 4 PM
EPLab Masterclass Series – “Kant and the French Revolution” (org. Lisbon Kant Group, Francisco Lisboa).
To Kant, the French revolution’s central events were the transfer of sovereignty to the people in 1789 and the trial and execution of the monarch in 1792-1793. Through a contextual study, this presentation argues that while both events manifested the principle of popular sovereignty, the first did so in lawful ways, whereas the latter was a perversion of the principle. Kant was convinced that historical examples can help us understand political philosophy, and this Element seeks to show this in practice.
To participate in the session via Zoom, use this link. The sessions will be recorded and will be available on IFILNOVA’s YouTube channel.
If you want to host one of the Kant Reading Group sessions, to be included on the group’s mailing list or to receive the text that will be discussed, please write to joaolemos@fcsh.unl.pt.
