The Lisbon Circle Reading Group

The Tools of Metaphysics and the Metaphysics of Science

The Center for Philosophy of the University of Lisbon (CFUL), the Center for the Philosophy of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (CFCUL) and the Institute of Philosophy of NOVA University Lisbon (IFILNOVA) are putting together the Lisbon Circle Reading Group.

The reading group will meet fortnightly, on Wednesdays, from 14:00 to 16:00.

The reading for this term will be Ted Sider’s The Tools of Metaphysics and the Metaphysics of Science. The book is based on Sider’s 2016 John Locke lectures at the University of Oxford. It “explores how changes in our metaphysical approach change what metaphysics tells us about the world” and “offers a new philosophical view of structuralism in science and mathematics”.

The calendar of readings is as follows:

  • October 7 — Chap. 1
  • October 21 — Chap. 2
  • November 4 — Chap. 3, up to and including §3.10
  • November 18 — Chap. 3, §3.11-3.18
  • December 2 — Chap. 4, up to and including §4.8
  • December 16 — Chap. 4, §4.9-4.12

Meetings will take place online via Zoom.
