André Sarmento is a PhD candidate in Film Studies at NOVA University Lisbon and a member of the research group “Cinema & Politics: Philosophical Approaches” of the Laboratory of Cinema and Philosophy at NOVA Institute of Philosophy. He has a degree in Culture Studies from University of Lisbon (2014) and a master’s degree in Communication Studies from ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon (2016), where he wrote a dissertation under the supervision of Professor Gustavo Cardoso. He is currently developing his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Maria Irene Aparício, a research project that aims to understand the depiction of the natural landscape in contemporary contemplative cinema. His work as a filmmaker has been supported with grants from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and presented in the official selections of film festivals in Lisbon, Granada, Leiden, Edinburgh, Seattle, Pasadena, Mexico City, Puebla, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília, among others cities.
