Jesús Navarro on “Hermeneutical Injustice, Understanding, and Know-How”
According to Miranda Fricker’s original conception, hermeneutical injustice occurs when social experiences are difficult to understand due to gaps in our collective hermeneutical resources, gaps that result from our unequal participation in sense-making practices. This talk aims to show that a truth-oriented conception of understanding is insufficient for addressing such situations. Instead, we need to develop a richer conception of understanding that is intrinsically related to our emotional and evaluative reactions, as well as our socially constituted know-hows.
