Film and Death featured at FCSH
What if a film could make us think about death without showing anyone dying?

The “FILM AND DEATH – Film Philosophy as a Meditation on Death” project, led by Susana Viegas, researcher at IFILNOVA, is featured in a recent article published on the NOVA FCSH website. Titled “What if a film could make us think about death without showing anyone dying?”, the article takes up one of the project’s central questions and explores some of the ideas underpinning its research into the relationship between cinema, philosophy and death. Among the topics highlighted is the concept of the “death-image”, as well as the ways in which cinematic elements such as time, waiting, absence and repetition can evoke death without directly representing it.

The article also offers a glimpse into different aspects of the project, from its research on film to the “FILM AND DEATH: A Conceptual Knowledge Map”, as well as initiatives that bring these questions beyond academia, including the “Falar sobre a morte (nunca matou ninguém)” series and the FILM AND DEATH TALKS podcast.

We invite you to read the full article (in Portuguese) on the NOVA FCSH website, where Susana Viegas discusses the development of the project, the questions that have emerged throughout the research, and how cinema can open up new ways of thinking about our relationship with death — and with life itself.
