Silvia Di Marco
Research Fellow

Silvia Di Marco received a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Lisbon, and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Milan (doctoral degree in association), with a dissertation titled “Towards an Epistemology of Medical Imaging” (2015). She has a BS in Biology from the University of Milan, and a postgraduate certificate in Science Communication from the same university. She was a member of the Centre for Philosophy of Science of the University of Lisbon (CFCUL), from January 2009 to December 2024, when CFCUL was closed.


Between 2001 and 2008 Silvia worked as a medical writer and editor for Masson and Elsevier Italy (Milan). Between 2009 and 2010 she was research fellow in the FCT project “Image in Science and Art”, and her doctorate was funded by an FCT-PhD scholarship (2010-2014). Between 2016 and 2019 she was post-doctoral fellow, first in the FCT research project “Which biodiversity definition for biodiversity conservation?”, and subsequently with an individual project in Philosophy of Medicine (CFCUL’s grant UID/FIL/00678/2018). Between 2019 and 2024 Silvia oversaw CFCUL’s projects (pre-grant) and communication and I was a member of CFCUL’s  Executive Committee.


Silvia is currently co-director of Olhares do Mediterrâneo – Women’s Film Festival (Lisbon), where she is the coordinator of programming (films and parallel activities) and of the industry programme.


Silvia’s research interests cover women’s representations and participation in cinema, film theory and sociology, intersectional feminist theories and intersectional feminist epistemologies. She has published several articles and book chapters on the epistemology and aesthetics of medical images.
